Haldwani, Uttarakhand: In a major crackdown against tax evasion ahead of the festive season, the Uttarakhand State Tax Department carried out raids on firecracker traders in Haldwani. Acting under Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s zero-tolerance policy, the department unearthed serious GST-related irregularities during the inspection.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of State Tax Commissioner Sounika Singh, following directives to tighten control over illegal tax practices during Diwali sales. The raids were led by Additional Commissioner Rakesh Kumar (Kumaon Zone, Rudrapur) and Joint Commissioner (SIB/Enforcement) Roshan Lal, who formed two special teams to carry out simultaneous inspections.
₹13 Lakh Collected in Immediate Tax Recovery
During the inspection, officials examined the traders’ purchase and sales records, stock details, and GST invoices. The team discovered major discrepancies indicating tax evasion, prompting them to collect the due amount on the spot. The department successfully recovered ₹13 lakh as immediate revenue from the two establishments involved.
Officials stated that a detailed financial investigation of the concerned firms is ongoing. Further punitive action will be taken if more evidence of tax evasion comes to light.
Department Officials Led Rigorous On-Ground Operation
More than ten senior officers were involved in the action, including Deputy Commissioner Hemlata Shukla, Assistant Commissioners Deepak Kumar, Tilesh Pant, Suraj Singh, and Ujjwal Balakoti, along with State Tax Officers Prashant Shukla, Arvesh, Akash, Ram Mahesh, and Vinuja Athar.
Joint Commissioner Roshan Lal emphasized that the department will maintain strict vigilance throughout the festive period. “Under the Chief Minister’s zero-tolerance policy, every trader must conduct business transparently and within legal limits. Those found guilty of tax evasion will face strict action,” he stated.
Further Inspections Planned in Haldwani
The department has also hinted that similar raids and inspections will continue in the coming days across Haldwani’s business establishments. Officials confirmed that checks on stock details and GST returns will intensify to ensure compliance with tax laws.
The State Tax Department has urged all traders to strictly follow GST norms and maintain transparency in their business practices, warning that violators will not be spared.
