Uttarakhand beekeeping, Honey production, Self employment: In a unique initiative to promote beekeeping in Uttarakhand around 60 kilograms of honey was extracted from bee boxes installed at the Chief Minister residence in Dehradun. The honey extraction was carried out in the first phase under the supervision of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami along with officials from the Horticulture Department. The effort highlights a practical model of sustainable practices and livelihood generation within government premises.
Push to Promote Self Employment Through Beekeeping
Chief Minister Dhami emphasized that beekeeping has immense potential in Uttarakhand and can become a strong source of self employment especially in rural and hilly regions. He stated that the state has a rich diversity of flowering plants which can support the production of high quality organic honey. The initiative aims to encourage local communities to adopt beekeeping as a viable livelihood option and reduce dependency on traditional income sources.
Development of Bee Friendly Garden Concept
During the programme, the Chief Minister directed officials to develop a 3B garden concept around the residence and nearby areas. This includes creating bee friendly, butterfly friendly and bird friendly gardens to support biodiversity and improve ecological balance. Such gardens are expected to enhance pollination support local flora and promote environmental awareness among citizens.
Encouraging Organic and Medicinal Honey Production
The government is also focusing on promoting the production of organic and medicinal honey especially in mountainous regions. With the presence of diverse medicinal plants, Uttarakhand has the potential to produce premium quality honey with added health benefits. Authorities are encouraging farmers and youth to explore this opportunity and benefit from growing demand in domestic and international markets.
