Tehri Lake, Uttarakhand Tourism, Adventure Sports: The Uttarakhand government is preparing to develop the 42 square kilometre Tehri Lake into a global tourism destination. Along with tourism, the lake area is also being planned as a hub for wellness activities and adventure sports.
A proposal related to the project was discussed in the recent cabinet meeting, where the Tourism Department received in principle approval. The government will now begin the process of appointing a consultant for preparing a detailed development plan.
Ring road and cycling track proposed around lake
Tehri Lake, formed on the Bhagirathi river under the Tehri Hydroelectric Project, has become a major attraction for tourists. Keeping this in mind, the government is planning major infrastructure development around the lake area.
A nearly 77 kilometre long ring road has been proposed around the lake along with footpaths and cycling tracks beside the road.
Adventure sports activities already attracting tourists
Adventure sports activities including kayaking, canoeing, jet skiing and parasailing are already being organised at Tehri Lake from time to time. These activities have helped Tehri Lake gain recognition on the adventure tourism map.
A successful trial of a seaplane has also been conducted in the lake earlier.
Focus on eco tourism and local economy
The government is now working on a comprehensive master plan for Tehri Lake with special focus on tourism, wellness, road connectivity, water sports, homestays and eco tourism.
A consultant will be appointed to prepare a detailed project report and action plan for these activities. According to sources, the main objective behind the initiative is to strengthen the economy of the Tehri region through tourism and related activities.
