Uttarakhand: The Uttarakhand government has announced the launch of Snow Leopard Tourism to strengthen winter tourism in the state. Inspired by the successful Ladakh model, the initiative will allow tourists to experience the Himalayan winter landscape while responsibly observing the rare and elusive snow leopard. The program aims to generate sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities living in high-altitude regions.
Gangotri National Park Pilot Project
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed officials to prepare a pilot project in Gangotri National Park, Uttarkashi district. Under this controlled winter tourism model, local residents will be actively involved through homestays, trained guiding services, and nature-based adventure activities. The focus will be on regulated tourism that balances wildlife conservation with economic benefits for communities.
Boosting Adventure and Tourism Infrastructure
Alongside snow leopard tourism, Uttarakhand plans to expand multiple winter activities such as skiing and snow trekking in Auli and Khaliya Top, winter carnivals in Mussoorie, Nainital, and Uttarkashi, wildlife tourism in Corbett and Nandhaur, and international yoga events in Rishikesh. The government has also ordered upgrades of GMVN and KMVN tourist facilities, promotion through social media campaigns, roadshows, and special winter packages to position Uttarakhand as a global winter tourism destination.
