Almora, Uttarakhand: Kavita Chand from Almora, Uttarakhand, has made the nation proud by successfully summiting Mount Vinson (4,892 metres), the highest peak in Antarctica, and hoisting the Indian national flag at its summit. This remarkable achievement in one of the world’s most extreme and isolated environments stands as a symbol of determination, courage, and national pride. Battling sub-zero temperatures, fierce icy winds, and harsh terrain, her ascent is regarded as one of the toughest challenges in global mountaineering.

A Major Step Towards the Seven Summits Challenge

Currently based in Mumbai, 40-year-old Kavita Chand is an accomplished endurance athlete and mountaineer. Her Mount Vinson climb marks a significant milestone in her ambitious ‘Seven Summits Challenge’, which involves scaling the highest peaks on all seven continents. Prior to this, she had already conquered Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe. With the successful Antarctic summit, her journey towards completing the prestigious global challenge has gained strong momentum.

From Almora to Antarctica: Strategy, Teamwork, and Inspiration

The expedition began on December 3 from India, with Kavita reaching Punta Arenas in Chile on December 4, followed by a flight to Union Glacier and onward to the Vinson Base Camp at an altitude of around 2,100 metres. The journey involved ski-equipped aircraft and was led by renowned high-altitude guide Mingma David Sherpa. Supported by experienced mountaineer Bharat Thammineni and his expedition company ‘Boots and Crampon’, the nine-member Indian team succeeded through careful acclimatisation, strategic planning, and strong teamwork. Calling the summit moment the proudest of her life, Kavita hopes her journey inspires working women and professionals to believe that career, fitness, and big dreams can be pursued together. A former media professional, she left her corporate career in 2024 to fully embrace fitness and adventure sports and is also a celebrated marathon runner with multiple national and international achievements.
