Rishikesh: Uttarakhand Rail Project: Another significant milestone has been achieved in the construction of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag new broad-gauge rail line project. The final breakthrough of the 10.847-kilometer-long Escape Tunnel-1 was successfully completed by the Rishikesh Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). With this, a total of 41 tunnel breakthroughs have now been completed in the project.
Escape Tunnel-1 is the second-longest tunnel in the project. It was constructed amidst the extremely challenging geological conditions of the Himalayas. The entire tunnel passes through a rock mass that is highly tectonized, intensely folded, and extensively faulted. During construction, the team encountered conditions involving massive shearing and zones of severely crushed rock at several locations.
Due to the complex geological conditions, thick mylonite zones were also encountered at various points within the tunnel. This was primarily caused by the tunnel’s proximity to the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT). Excavating the tunnel safely and successfully under such conditions posed a major challenge for the engineering team.
Achieving the final breakthrough of Escape Tunnel-1 despite these difficult geological conditions reflects the technical expertise, persistent effort, excellent coordination, and teamwork of the officials, engineers, technical experts, contractors, and workers associated with the project.
A total of 41 breakthroughs have been completed so far, while the remaining five are expected to be achieved within the next year. With this continuous progress, the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project is advancing rapidly towards its construction goals.
This final breakthrough of Escape Tunnel-1 is not merely a significant engineering achievement; it is also another crucial step towards establishing modern rail connectivity in the rugged terrain of the Himalayas.
