Defence cooperation India Japan: Chaubatia: Ranikhet: Defence Partnership: The seventh edition of the annual India Japan joint military exercise Dharma Guardian commenced on February 24 2026 at the Foreign Training Node in Chaubatia Almora district of Uttarakhand. The exercise will be conducted till March 9 2026 showing the deepening defence partnership between India and Japan
This year each side has deployed around 120 soldiers with the Japanese contingent represented by troops from the 32nd Infantry Regiment and the Indian Army contingent drawn from the Ladakh Scouts regiment. The joint drill brings together skilled forces from both nations for two weeks of intensive training.
Objectives and Training Focus
The primary aim of Dharma Guardian is to enhance interoperability and combined operational capabilities between the Indian Army and the Japan Ground Self Defence Force. While improving physical conditioning the training also focuses on refining joint planning synchronising tactical drills and enhancing modern technology integration.
During the exercise troops are engaged in tasks such as setting up temporary operating bases, establishing intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance coordination and conducting tactical check posts and manoeuvres. These activities help both armies learn from each other and become better prepared for joint operations in semi urban environments.
Strategic Significance of the Exercise
Exercise Dharma Guardian is held alternately in India and Japan and has grown into a key pillar of defence cooperation between the two nations. This annual exercise not only improves military skills but also reinforces strategic ties and mutual trust in the Indo Pacific region.
