Uttarakhand: Sushant Uniyal: Mushroom Business Startup: In 2017, Sushant Uniyal, then a media student working in Delhi, made a life-changing decision. He left his private-sector job and returned to his native Uttarakhand to explore farming opportunities. Encouraged by his brother, Sushant began experimenting with mushroom cultivation, a farming practice not widely pursued in their region at the time. What started as a modest experiment soon became a serious business venture.
Building a Thriving Mushroom Business
The brothers initially produced only 1–2 kilograms of oyster mushrooms, but over time their efforts expanded significantly. By 2019, they formally established a large mushroom production unit in the Garhwal region. Today, their farm produces about 100 kilograms of oyster mushrooms daily, earning an annual turnover of approximately ₹24–25 lakh, a remarkable growth from an initial daily income of just ₹1,000–₹2,000.
Creating Jobs and Learning Opportunities
Their success has had broader community impacts beyond personal earnings. The venture now provides direct employment to seven to eight people and supports around 15–20 more indirectly. Additionally, more than 100 individuals from the region have visited the farm to learn about mushroom cultivation, indicating growing interest in agripreneurship and sustainable farming practices. Their work has even been recognised through involvement in government projects promoting sustainable agriculture in Uttarakhand.
Ideal Climate for Mushroom Cultivation
According to Sushant, the natural climate of Uttarakhand is highly suitable for oyster mushroom farming, allowing cultivation for eight to ten months of the year without expensive climate control systems like air conditioners. This makes mushrooms an appealing and profitable crop option for local farmers, especially in a hilly state where traditional crops may face climatic challenges.
Inspiration for Sustainable Rural Enterprise
From a media student to a successful agripreneur, Sushant’s journey is a powerful reminder of how innovation, passion, and dedication can transform rural livelihoods. His story highlights the potential of sustainable farming ventures to create economic opportunities and inspire others to pursue agribusiness in Uttarakhand and beyond.
