Uttarakhand: Vehicle Fitness: Transparent testing: Road safety: Uttarakhand is planning to strengthen road safety and technical inspection of vehicles by establishing district-wise Automated Testing Stations (ATS) across the state. This initiative comes as a proactive step by the state Transport Department following guidelines received from the Government of India to improve vehicle technical checks and reduce risk from unsafe vehicles on roads.

Public Private Partnership for ATS Operation

According to the Transport Department’s plan, the Automated Testing Stations will be operated under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This approach aims to combine modern technology and expertise from the private sector with government monitoring to make the inspection process more efficient, less prone to human error, and fully transparent.

At these ATS centers, vehicles will undergo scientific and automated checks covering critical components such as the braking system, suspension, steering alignment, axle alignment, headlight illumination, tire condition, and pollution levels. Only after successfully clearing these tests will a vehicle be issued a fitness certificate.

Existing Stations and New Expansion Plans

Currently, Uttarakhand already has seven operational Automated Testing Stations in locations including Devikhet, Doiwala, Haridwar, Rudrapur, Haldwani, and Tanakpur. These stations are already providing vehicle fitness testing services. The Transport Department is planning to open six additional stations in places such as Kotdwar, Rishikesh, Almora, Pauri, Uttarkashi, and Pithoragarh to further improve accessibility for vehicle owners throughout the state.

The establishment of district-wise ATS centers represents an important step toward ensuring safer roads in Uttarakhand. Officials say that by expanding the reach of modern and automated fitness inspection facilities, unfit or technically deficient vehicles can be more effectively identified and kept off the roads, which in turn will help reduce accidents and improve overall traffic safety.
