Kotabagh: Uttarakhand: Ghoda Library: In the remote mountainous regions of Kotabagh block in Nainital district, where roads are still a distant dream and access to educational resources remains a challenge, an extraordinary idea is quietly transforming young lives. Carrying books instead of burdens, a horse moves through steep trails and forest paths, bringing knowledge, hope, and imagination to children who once had little access to reading material.
An Idea Born in the Mountains
On 12 June 2023, Shubham Badhani launched the unique initiative known as the Ghoda Library. Faced with the harsh realities of inaccessible terrain and limited infrastructure, he turned to a traditional and trusted companion of the hills, the horse. With its help, a mobile library began its journey, reaching far-flung villages where conventional libraries could never arrive.
Building a Reading Culture at the Last Mile
The core aim of the Ghoda Library is to nurture a love for reading among children living in remote mountain settlements. Colourful books, story collections, and learning materials carried by the moving library have become a source of excitement and curiosity for young minds. Beyond books, the initiative fosters imagination, confidence, and holistic development among children who are often left at the margins of educational access.
From Local Effort to Global Recognition
What started as a grassroots effort soon captured widespread attention. The Ghoda Library initiative has received appreciation at local, state, national, and even international levels. Several leaders, including Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and senior Union Ministers, have publicly praised the innovation and dedication behind this effort.
National Spotlight Through ‘Mann Ki Baat’
The initiative gained nationwide recognition when Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the Ghoda Library in the 105th episode of his popular radio programme “Mann Ki Baat.” By openly acknowledging Shubham Badhani’s work, the Prime Minister turned this local innovation into a symbol of national pride, not just for Uttarakhand, but for all mountainous regions striving to overcome geographical barriers.
Following the Prime Minister’s appreciation, the Horse Library has emerged as a powerful example of innovation, inclusive education, and community participation. It sends a clear message: strong resolve can overcome limited resources, and education can reach even the most remote corners when driven by purpose.
Bringing the Spirit of Inclusive Development to Life
The Horse Library reflects the spirit of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” by ensuring that education reaches the last child in the last village. As this moving library continues its journey through the hills, it stands as a reminder that sometimes, the most impactful solutions are also the simplest, guided by empathy, commitment, and belief in the power of education.
