Niti Valley ultra marathon, Uttarakhand adventure tourism, Chamoli sports event: In a major step to promote tourism in the border areas of Chamoli district, the Tourism Department will organize the Niti Extreme Ultra Run in Niti Valley for the first time. The event is planned for May 31 and June 1 and online registration has already started. The initiative is aimed at bringing national and international attention to the scenic but remote region while encouraging adventure sports in Uttarakhand.
Multiple Race Categories Announced
The event will include several race categories designed for different levels of runners. The 42 kilometer run will begin from Malari at an altitude of about 3100 meters and reach Niti village at around 3600 meters before returning to Malari. The main 75 kilometer ultra marathon will start from Rimkhim in the border region at an altitude of about 4340 meters and pass through Sumna and Niti before concluding at Malari. In addition, 21 kilometer and 5 kilometer races will be held on June 1. The 5 kilometer category will be open to participants of all age groups including both men and women.
75 Kilometer Race Reserved for Indian Participants
Officials have said that the 75 kilometer ultra run will be open only to Indian participants because foreign nationals are not issued Inner Line Permits for this sensitive border area. Runners interested in the 75 kilometer category must meet eligibility conditions. Participants should have completed a 42 kilometer run within the last 10 months or two 21 kilometer runs within the last 6 months. Those who have completed the Adi Kailash Ultra Run or any ultra run within the last year will also be eligible. The time limit to complete the 75 kilometer race has been fixed at 14 hours.
42 Kilometer Race Open to Foreign Runners Too
Unlike the ultra marathon, the 42 kilometer race does not require Inner Line Permit clearance, which means foreign runners can also participate in this category. However, they must provide proof of completing a 21 kilometer run in a high Himalayan region within the last 6 months or two half marathons within the last 10 months. The time limit for this race has been kept at 8 hours. These conditions have been introduced to ensure that only physically prepared runners take part in the high altitude challenge.
Boost for Sports and Border Tourism
The event is expected to give a strong push to sports tourism and local economic activity in the Niti Valley region. By combining endurance sports with the natural beauty of the high Himalayas, the marathon can help showcase the region as an emerging destination for adventure tourism. Officials have also begun preparations for the event and see it as an important opportunity to bring wider recognition to the border villages of Chamoli.
